Hotel disturbance in downtown Jackson

Posted: Updated:

A wanted fugitive is in police custody tonight after a short standoff at a downtown hotel. It happened in downtown Jackson at the Sleep Inn, located at 209 south Gallatin Street.

The U.S. Marshals office says they received a tip from law enforcement in north Mississippi that the wanted man was in the hotel. They identified him as 25-year-old Trenard Lavelle Johnson.

When the officers located Johnson, he immediately locked himself inside a second floor room. Officers surrounded the building, some heavily armed.

The Marshal's office called Jackson Police, who brought in their swat team and a crisis negotiator.

After almost and hour of coaxing, they were able to get Johnson to surrender. He was wanted on a warrant from Southhaven for credit card forgery.

"We developed info he was staying at this hotel, when our investigators attempted to take Mr. Johnson into custody, he barricaded himself in a room" said Richard Griffin with the U. S. Marshals Service. "We called JPD for assistance. Their negotiators came out and after about an hour standoff he was safely taken into custody without incident."

No weapons found. Other guests at the hotel were not evacuated during the standoff.

Johnson was taken back to DeSoto County immediately to face false pretense charges.
