Fugitive standoff ends at Jackson hotel

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A wanted fugitive is in police custody Monday night after a short standoff with police at a downtown hotel.

It happened at the Sleep Inn located at 209 South Gallatin Street.

The U.S. Marshals office says they received a tip from law enforcement in north Mississippi that the wanted man was in the hotel.

Officers  identified that man as 25 year old Trenard Lavelle Johnson.

When the officers located Johnson, he immediately locked himself inside a second floor room.

Officers immediately surrounded the building, some heavily armed.

The Marshal's office called Jackson Police who brought in their SWAT team and a crisis negotiator.

After almost and hour of coaxing, they were finally able to get Johnson to surrender.

Johnson was wanted on a warrant from Southhaven for credit card forgery.

"We developed info he was staying at this hotel, when our investigators attempted to take Mr. Johnson into custody, he barricaded himself in a room," said Richard Griffin of the U.S. Marshals Office. "We called JPD for assistance. Their negotiators came out and after about an hour standoff he was safely taken into custody without incident."

After searching his room, there were no weapons found.

Other guests at the hotel were not evacuated during the standoff.

Johnson will be transported to face false pretense charges immediately.
