JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Mississippians who have given their time, without expecting anything in return, were honored Monday.

The awards ceremony for the Governor's Initiative For Volunteer Excellence was held at the Mississippi Museum of Art.

The awards are given to volunteers who have made a significant impact in their communities.

Among the award winners was Cathy Johnson.

Johnson received the "Outstanding Achievement In Education Award", for her work teaching classes to inmates at the Hinds County Jail.

"I have a captive audience, they love to come to class they beg me for books, they beg me for homework," Johnson said. "I'm the only teacher in the world that has students saying 'Please can I have homework', so that's a really wonderful motivator and they thank me everyday."

Johnson teaches 4 classes a week to both male and female inmates.

50 people have received their GED's through her program in the last 15 years.
