It was not just another day for a lucky student at Lanier High School in Jackson. Jamie Gibson, a senior at LHS, was surprised with a free laptop computer in the middle of class on Wednesday morning.
Now, his award did come with some effort. Gibson participated in the Ninth Annual FAFSA Event, which provided one-on-one assistance to Jackson Public School seniors applying for college financial aid.
At the various FAFSA fairs, students entered their names into the drawing for the laptop. Immediately after being presented with the laptop, Gibson was overwhelmed.
"I didn't see it at all (winning the laptop), I'm really happy about it!" Gibson said. "I got a new laptop I really needed for college. I feel excited, ready to graduate!"
The Education Services Foundation, a non-profit in Mississippi that provides free college planning, made the giveaway possible.
The computer was donated by Thandi Wade, a Jackson attorney with the law firm Tatum and Wade.
After Gibson graduates in the spring, he plans on attending Jackson State University in the fall.
