A Jackson man is in police custody after allegedly fatally shooting his mother early Friday morning. The shooting happened in South Jackson in the 3400 block of Shannon Dale Drive.
It all started around 4:40 in the morning at 3461 Shannon Dale Drive. Jackson police spokeswoman Colendula Green says 20 year-old Mark Lewis shot his mother, 38 year-old Shamese Church in the stomach. Church was then rushed to Central Mississippi Medical Center where she died.
Now, Lewis was initially charged with aggravated assault, but those charges have been upgraded. Officer Green says witnesses were in the home at the time of the shooting.
"According to the recording party they heard gunshots and once they walked into the hallway they noticed Ms. Church lying on the floor, Mr. Lewis was taken into custody where he was charged with aggravated assault, but due to Ms. Church being deceased at this time he will be charged with a homicide," says Officer Green.
Now, several neighbors spoke to us off camera and told us that Lewis has been a terror to the neighborhood for quite some time. A few neighbors say they've actually called the police on Lewis and received case cards on Lewis from the police department.
