OXFORD, Miss. (AP) - Mississippi linebacker D.T. Shackelford has been awarded the Chucky Mullins Courage Award.
Shackelford is the first junior to receive the award. Until this year, only seniors were eligible. He will also be the first player since the 2005 season to wear Mullins' No. 38.
The award is sponsored by Phi Beta Sigma fraternity. It honors the late Chucky Mullins, who was paralyzed when making a tackle in 1989. Mullins fought his injuries and returned to school. He passed away on May 6, 1991.
The university said in a news release that Shackelford's selection was announced Thursday. Shackelford, 6-foot-1, 244 pounds, made 48 tackles last season while splitting time between linebacker and defensive end.
He recently tore the ACL in his right knee and will be out six to eight months.
