Hearings to decide Dr. Edwards' future with JPS continue

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Contract renewal hearings continued Friday for Dr. Lonnie Edwards, the superintendent of Jackson Public Schools.

Earlier this year, the JPS Board of Trustees voted not to renew Edwards' contract, which expires in July.

School-district attorneys continued to call witnesses, mostly current and past board members. Their position is that Dr. Edwards has not made necessary improvements to the district.

Taking the stand Friday were former JPS Board Members, Jonathan Larkin, Ann Jones and Delmer Stamps.

Stamps was Board President in 2008 when he voted to hire Dr. Edwards.

Jones left the witness stand saying, "This is a deterrent to teaching and learning," referring to the hearing process.

Edwards is represented by attorney and former Jackson mayor Dale Dank's. Edwards claims he met expectations and goals for the district, and is asking for a two-year contract extension.

Dank's said, "This man came in with three years to serve, having to spend the first three straightening out the situation."

The Board will take another vote on Edwards contract extension after the hearings conclude.

The hearing will continue at 9 a.m. May 13.
