Update: EOC director comments on Byram radio flap

Posted: Updated:

We have contacted EOC Director Jimmie Lewis about the Byram police radio matter. Lewis has been at the helm since November 2009.

Yesterday, 3 On Your Side informed Board of Supervisors President George Smith that the Board neglected to get permission from the Wireless Communication Commission for the purchase of E.F. Johnson radios. Right now, they're sitting in storage at the dealer's office. Since the price is more than $100,000, the Wireless Commission must rubber stamp it.

Lewis says back in March, the board authorized him to order the radios. But they were supposed to be shipped to him, and they weren't. Because they're not in his possession, Lewis says the radios are not the property of Hinds County.

A purchase order exists for the radios, but it's unlikely they have been paid for at this point.
