Hinds submits proper police radio paperwork

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Next week, the Hinds County Board of Supervisors might learn if they will face penalties for buying $113,000 worth of police radios before getting the proper approval.

Last month, the Board ordered 45 radios for the Byram Police Department. The brand is EF Johnson. 3 On Your Side surprised Board President George Smith when we informed him last week that the Communication Commission had not received their request for the purchase. Any purchase of communications equipment exceeding $100,000 must get prior approval.

Chris Epps, who heads the Commission, says the proper paperwork is now in house. It will go to a procurement committee, then to the full commission for approval.

Commission members will have to discuss whether the county will be liable for buying the radios without approval first.

The City of Byram won't be taking the radios. The Board of Aldermen has authorized the purchase of 60 Motorola radios for about $233,000.  That purchase request has been approved by the Commission.
