JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Residents living near the Jackson nightclub where a man was killed this weekend is increasing efforts to close the establishment.

Jackson police said Carlos Gray, 32, died Sunday morning after being shot inside the Purple Passion night club on Medgar Evers Boulevard.

A Jackson woman, who does not want to be identified, said her brother was killed in the same club in January of 2008.

She has gathered about 500 signatures on a petition demanding that the club be closed.

They were presented to officials in Jackson Mayor Harvey Johnson's office.

"The person that was killed was a friend of mine, so it really brought back memories...The violence goes back from when it was Williams Lounge," said the woman who we called "Janet" to protect her identity. "A friend of mine, Patrick Stewart, was killed. So it's just not happening now. It's been going on for a long long time."

"You're only a rock throw from a church," Ward 3 Councilman Kenneth Stokes said. "You're only a few feet away from the Medgar Evers Historical District, and you got people dying like it's some kind of game."

The councilman represents the area where the nightclub is located.

Stokes has requested that the city's Legal Department declare the club a nuisance.

We have been unable to reach club owners for comment.
