Navy Seals' training in Hancock County

Posted: Updated:
HANCOCK COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

U.S. Navy Seals carried out the mission of killing Osama bin Laden.

They are specifically trained for missions like this, that are seemingly impossible.

About 200 seals each year get some of their training in Hancock County at the U.S. Navy Training Facility on the Pearl River at the Stennis Space Center.

One of their favorite weapons for training is the Gatlin Gun which can fire 3,000 rounds a minute.

Every year, about 200 seals go through this really tough training on Mississippi soil.

There is no way of knowing if those who participated in the bin Laden mission actually trained in Mississippi, but WLBT is told that it is very likely, by Naval sources in Washington.

We found a Navy Seal who served in Vietnam from 1971 to 1976.

55 year old Greg Tierce of Pearl knew it was probably the Seals that killed bin Laden, when he first heard about the mission.

"First thing that went through my mind, is probably Seals that went in there and got him," Tierce said. "So, that's the only organization trained to do that."

Tierce is very skeptical about it actually being bin Laden who was killed, but hopes it is true and is very proud the Seals did the job.

"It makes me very proud that I was a member of the team," Tierce said. "You know, once a Seal, always a Seal. Like once a Marine, always a Marine. I am very proud that I was on and part of a unit that went in and got him."

So it is possible some of the Seal team members who did the bin Laden mission actually got some of their training in the Magnolia State.
