JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Hattiesburg native, Major General (ret.) Jeffery Hammond was working in his office in Virginia when a plane hijacked by terrorists struck the Pentagon.

He shared his thoughts Monday after learning of Osama bin Laden's death.

"My initial reaction was thank god. What a great day! What a great moment for the U.S. Special Operation command. The great soldiers, sailors airmen, marines who put their lives on the line each day. A great moment. Long over due.

"He killed a lot of Americans, but strategically I don't think he planned on this country letting lose like we did. immediately going into Afghanistan on the hunt. Spreading our attack and our effort into Iraq and other places across the world."

"Had he known that, I think he probably would have taken a much different tactic. Ultimately, it lead to his demise. Thank god. His death, which occurred yesterday as announced by our president."
