The Mississippi River at Natchez
NATCHEZ, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
Preparations are under way to protect historic buildings in Natchez, from record flooding. At Natchez Under The Hill, crews are filling giant square sand bags to hold off river water from threatening two restaurants, which remain open, and several buildings.
The Isle of Capri casino is also in operation, but will close Saturday.
A few homes in rural Adams county are expected to flood.
Across the river in Vidalia, crews are using the same type of sandbags to save a multi-million dollar waterfront development.
Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal toured the area Thursday, reassuring residents everything was being done to protect them from the rising river.
Governor Jindal said, "Here in Vidalia we've got water that will be topping this waterfront as soon as Monday, the state has sent 18 thousand feet of Hesco baskets to protect the water wells, critical infrastructure."
Inmates were moving items out of the Vidalia Convention Center which is expected to get at least a foot of water inside when the river crests.
