JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Wingfield's JaMichael Hawkins is the latest high school basketball star to sink his teeth into Alcorn State.
"I have decided to spend my next four years at Alcorn State, home of the Braves! I feel like I can learn what it takes to be a college player. How the speed is going to change. The flow of the game. They are going to teach me how to get stronger, get better," said Hawkins.
Hawkins officially signed with Alcorn Thursday morning admitting new Braves coach Luther Riley was the driving force behind his decision.
"I chose Alcorn because coach Riley is a good coach. He's a leader on and off the court. I like some of the players he already recruited. I feel like we can go down to Alcorn and start a new beginning," Hawkins.
Hawkins will be the first in his family to attend Alcorn, ending a long standing tradition of Jackson State graduates.
"We decided to let JaMichael make that choice. We just supported him in his choice when he went on campus he was just, he felt it was a good fit and was really impressed with coach Riley, the campus as well as a lot of people that he met he made it was kind of a done deal then," said Sheila Hawkins.
