Farewell ceremony for unit heading for Iraq

DECATUR, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Family and friends cheered soldiers leaving for a tour of duty in Iraq Friday.

The Mississippi Army National Guard's First Battalion, 204th Air Defense Artillery conducted a sendoff ceremony in Decatur for their upcoming mission in Iraq.

The ceremony was held at East Central Community College.

Approximately 260 soldiers will be mobilized for one year in support of Operation New Dawn.

They will be responsible for conducting counter rocket, artillery and mortar operations.

The unit is headquartered in Newton and has subordinate groups in Bay Springs, Forest and Morton.

The 1-204th ADA will travel to Fort Still, Oklahoma to complete the post mobilization training required for deployment.
