Congressman Bennie Thompson returned to his alma mater Saturday where a building was dedicated in his honor.
Mississippi's second district representative cut the ribbon at the new building in the center of Tougaloo College's campus.
It houses classrooms, as well as an art gallery.
The facility will be called the Bennie G. Thompson Academic and Civil Rights Research Center.
Thompson said he was honored that the college trustees thought enough of him to name the building after him.
"It's the purpose of the building that I'm excited about. That we can tie academics and civil rights together to better our community and the fact that this is the newest building on campus at Tougaloo, an institution that I love," said Rep. Thompson.
The dedication was a part of Tougaloo's weekend commencement activities.
Graduation is Sunday at 10 a.m.
