Hinds County residents protest landfill

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Dozens of concerned citizens packed the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality's permit board meeting.

The MDEQ held an evidenciary hearing requested by the Hinds County Citizens Against Rezoning. The group composed of several concerned citizens would like the MDEQ to re-consider a permit the board re-issued to the Faircloth Rubbish Landfill back in May 2010.

By law, debris like construction material should only be allowed into the landfill. But those who live nearby the landfill, which is just south of Clinton, believe garbage is being dumped into the site.

Terri Moore, a member of the Hinds County Citizens Against Rezoning says "this rubbish landfill is really hazardous because there's so many things that happen there's vultures that circle and you know they don't come to eat dirt and we have the smell, the methane gas that has come forth that has been hazardous."

During the hearing, the attorney representing Faircloth Rubbish Landfill said the landfill company has followed all of its permit requirements.
