Efforts are being taken to limit expected flooding in the delta through levee systems.
Today the Army Corp of Engineers began work to shore up a Yazoo backwater levee just north of the steel bayou floodgate.
Large plastic tarps are being placed on top of the levee to prevent erosion.
Corp officials expect the water to flow about a foot over the levee later this week.
If left unprotected, the levee could start to crumble as the water saturates it, possibly causing catastrophic flooding in the delta.
The Corp says the plastic should prevent that and keep the flood estimates within the earlier predictions.
