Controversial political ad for Madison Co. Sheriff candidate

MADISON COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A political advertisement is causing a buzz in Madison County and Jackson.

Mark Sandridge is running for Madison County Sheriff.

The Madison deputies' ad talks about the dividing line between Jackson and Madison County of County Line Road.

The announcer then talks about Jackson as a crime ridden city and says the other side is a great place to live.

"This side represents one of the most violent city's in the nation. Over here on our side, one of the most desirable communities in America to raise a family."

"Jackson is pretty violent," Jackson resident said. "And I really do think the police need to step it up a bit."

We asked a Madison County resident if she thinks the political ad is divisive.

"I think it could be."

This has inflamed some Jackson residents who say on blogs, that the candidate is divisive and bashing Jackson.

On Sandridge's campaign website, some Madison County residents are applauding the controversial ad.

Some are urging Sandridge not to back down to criticism and for others to get a reality check.

Mark Sandridge declined to go on camera Wednesday.  Thursday we received this response to our questions in writing.

While some are applauding your ad…many in Jackson are highly critical saying it only serves to be divisive and you may have trouble working with lawmen in Hinds and Jackson.  What is your reaction?

"Actually, since it began running, we have been, literally, overwhelmed with positive responses from Madison County residents. We've even had positive responses to the ad from a number of Hinds County residents, actually thanking us for for being forthright in calling attention to their crime issues. By contrast, we've had a few negative remarks as well...however, the positive/encouraging comments have far outweighed the negative ones by a significant margin."

Do you stand by the ad and why?

"Yes, I firmly stand by the ad. I am running for Sheriff of Madison County - an office whose number one responsiblity is protection of the residents and visitors of the County. In light of this, for me to ignore the indisputable facts of an overwhelming level of crime in a neighboring county would be, professionally speaking, irresponsible. This acknowledgement of fact however, is not and should not be construed as a 'slap in the face' to Hinds Countians. The dedicated men and women of law enforcement in Hinds County are doing their best to curb crime and should be applauded for the work they perform. If elected, I will put forth my best efforts in cooperating with and assisting all city and county law enforcement officials in protecting their citizens."
