U.S. Highway 61 closed until further notice

WARREN COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A sign was put in place to block U.S. 61, some nine miles north of Vicksburg.

The road went underwater just overnight in the southbound lane. U.S. 61 is also blocked on the north side of the Yazoo River at the Yazoo backwater levee.

Only emergency vehicles will be allowed to travel the partially submerged road.

Willie Lewis, who lives on Highway 3 had to get motel in Vicksburg.

"I had to get a hotel in the town, so it's gonna be rough," Lewis said.

Others were plenty upset about the long drive around they will have to take to get to points north of Vicksburg.

"Well I had 10 more miles to go when I had to turn around, and go all the way back around to Greenville and I am going to Valley Park," said Jerry Robin of Valley Park.

"I missed it about 5 minutes, I am trying to get back get me another load, but it don't look like it's happening", added Jimmy Simmons of Itta Bena.

"I was trying to get to work at IP, but I think I am gonna have to go back around and go through Old Bridge Road to get there", an unknown commuter said.

"This is ridiculous, the road I went down 15 minutes ago is not underwater, and no alternative route, nothing. No communication with the public," a frustrated Wesley Johnson of Valley park added.

To show you how the water is rising, we talked with Eric Clayton and his wife last week just off Highway 3 as he was building a levee around his trailer. It didn't work and he had to leave with a family of six.

U.S. Highway 61 won't be reopened until the water goes down.
