Natchez lumber company fighting to survive flooding

NATCHEZ, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A 100 year old lumber company is in the 9th round of a flood fight in Natchez.

J.M. Jones Lumber Company has built 15 foot high levees around their lumber mill, hoping to prevent a flood that would destroy their business.

Almost all of their employees are working on fortifying levees and sandbagging during the day.

The milling operation has been shut down for several weeks.

"We have no engineering experience, we've sunk half a million dollars into this levee," said Lee Jones, owner of J.M. Jones Lumber Company.

Barge traffic on the river has undercut his levee in several places.

The river is expected to rise another foot and a half before cresting Saturday.
