The rising Mississippi River and it's path of destruction

Posted: Updated:

Everyone to the south of Vicksburg is watching the bloated Mississippi river rise.

WLBT took a look Tuesday from the air via Skycopter 3.

The little town of Allen has survived the river's wrath, but in the distance a looming threat for miles and miles.

An ocean of water.

Skycopter 3 flew over this portion of Highway 61 South, closed off to all but emergency traffic.

This is a site rarely seen, if ever.

Both lanes are submerged.

Then there was the the Rodney Community just southwest of Alcorn.

Backwaters have taken over.

Taken over beautiful places of worship, swamped homes.

The owner of a house tried in vain to keep the muddy waters out.

A levee was built.

It was all in vain.

Now pumps are pulling water out by the gallons with hopes the damage will somehow be minimized.

Farther to the north in Claiborne County, Skycopter 3 flew near Port Gibson.

The back drop, Mississippi's nuclear power plant.

Waters cover low lying areas near the plant but it remains secure.

WLBT captured a strange site, manmade in a wheat field and carved into the word Vicksburg and the year 2011.

A subtle, yet lasting reminder the farmland has escaped, as a flood of historic proportions continues to slink its way to the Gulf of Mexico.
