A Jackson Public School board member's donation to the school district has a colleague raising questions about fairness.
Dr. George Schimmel, whose three children attended Murrah High School and Chastain Middle School, gives annual donations to the district.
He recently gave a $250.00 book donation to Murrah.
Dr. Ivory Phillips told board members a mechanism should be in place to spread the donated money throughout the schools.
In response, Schimmel gave a $1,000.00 donation to the school system with the stipulation that Dr. Phillips choose where the money goes.
"I think it ought to be something that's determined by the superintendent and staff, but l like the spirit of it in that it begins the process of spreading the wealth around, particularly to those schools that may not have gotten any donations in a long time," Dr. Phillips said.
"Feeling guilty I felt this might be a way to address Dr. Phillips's concerns, but I'm certainly open to whatever the board pleases," Dr. Schimmel said.
The board voted to accept Dr. Schimmel's gift and allow the superintendent and staff to determine a future method of sharing donations with poorer schools in the district.
