Mississippi State fires softball coach

STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) - Mississippi State has fired softball coach Jay Miller after nine seasons with the program.

Miller took the Bulldogs to five NCAA Tournaments during his first six seasons, and had a 295-253 record overall. But the Bulldogs slumped to a 78-89 record over the past three seasons, including a 24-32 mark this spring.

Miller has more than 1,000 wins during his 29-year college coaching career. He was also named the United States National Team in 2009, guiding the team to six gold medals over two years.

Mississippi State athletics director Scott Stricklin said in a statement that "it was time for new leadership" and a search for a replacement would begin immediately. Miller's contract expires June 30.
