Flood waters over top makeshift levee

Posted: Updated:
WARREN COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The Mississippi River may be receding, but the threat still remains for homeowners who have built levees around their property.

Last Sunday we met Paul Lynn who lives on Highway 61 in the Yokena Community of Warren county.

He added 18 feet to a levee he built around his home in 2008.

It was holding back 25 feet of water Sunday.

Wednesday morning water began going over the levee.

That's when Lynn got to work.

He said the flood waters were slowly eating away at the earthen structure.

Lynn got behind the wheel of a bulldozer and worked into the night to build a second levee around his home.

"I've done everything I thought I could. I kept it off my house for the longest parts of time that way the small levee around the house would hold and keep all the snakes and everything as long as I could away from my house and I'm happy with it. I was born and raised here. I did what I could to save my house," said Lynn.

The construction company owner said the levee held to 57 feet until it was over topped by waves that left a 12 feet wide hole.
