JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Southern Miss outfielder Tyler Koelling won the Cellular South Ferriss Trophy after helping the Golden Eagles win a share of the Conference USA regular-season title.
Koelling leads USM with a .367 batting average and 18 doubles. The 6-foot-0, 190-pound senior from Luling, La., also has four homers, 46 RBIs and has struck out only nine times in 229 at-bats.
The other finalists were USM infielder B.A. Vollmuth and Mississippi State infielder Jarrod Parks. Vollmuth hit 12 homers this season while Parks leads the Southeastern Conference with a .385 batting average.
The Ferriss Trophy is given to the state's top college baseball player. It's voted on by a 25-member panel that includes college coaches, major league scouts and a media member.
