PEARL, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A Pearl Fire Department ladder truck raised a massive American flag on the median of Highway 80 in Pearl. It's for the family of Army Staff Sergeant David Self. He died in Afghanistan on May 16, one of four American soldiers killed by an I-E-D in an insurgent attack.

We were asked not to get video of the hearse, or the family.

Hundreds of other supporters lined the funeral procession route to pay their respects. "I almost cried, me and my mom," says Skylea Pope, a 10-year-old who came with some family members.

From every generation, they held signs and waved flags, thanking the fallen soldier for his sacrifice. "Pearl is a pretty close community. We want to show our support the best we can, one way we can do that is be out here to show our support in this time of need for his family and friends," says Gavin Gill, District 6 Alderman in Pearl.

Dianna Israel holds a sign from the Pearl High School class of 2024, when her grandson Elijah will graduate. "He doesn't really understand. We thought he needed to come out, pay his respects," Israel says.

The Patriot Guard played a big role in keeping things orderly and dignified, as did the Pearl Police and Fire Departments. "To make sure we come out, provide a good environment to where people can come out safely and pay honor, tribute to a true American hero," says Assistant Fire Chief Brad Thornton.
