Freedom Riders respond to governor

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Freedom Riders and advocates for the Scott sisters are asking Governor Haley Barbour to grant them a full pardon.

The on-going request for Gladys and Jamie Scott's pardon comes after Governor Barbour apologized to the Freedom Riders for the injustice the civil rights activists endured.

The Freedom Riders and other activists have over 2,000 petition signatures urging Governor Barbour to grant the sisters full pardon.

Freedom Rider Dr. Amos Brown says he applauds the governor's apology to the Freedom Riders.

However, Brown doesn't think the apology can stand alone until injustices like racism and inequality are reconciled in Mississippi.

Dr. Brown says, "It was very gracious, it was very kind, it was great of his office that he did it. Governor Barbour gave a statement of apology and I applaud that, but the Bible says one must show fruits of repentance."

Dr. Brown says the Governor's apology will hold more weight when the state confronts realities like the confederate flag and the injustice many African-Americans have faced in the justice system.
