Flood tempers Memorial Day festivities

Posted: Updated:

More than 100 people participated in Memorial Day activities in Vicksburg Monday.

The event themed "Lest We Forget" featured a parade, a memorial service, and a wreath-laying ceremony in the Vicksburg National Military Park.

Brigadier General Robert Crear laid the wreath at the soldiers grave.  "The fact Americans go out and celebrate today at the beginning of summer, I'm proud of that," said General Crear.

The celebratory atmosphere usually associated with Memorial Day was absent in many neighborhoods where residents are still trying to recover from the devastating flood.

City officials opened up Washington Street just north of downtown, where the water had receded.

Mayor Paul Winfield says the city is finalizing debris removal plans.

"There are still quite a few areas effected by water, they're going to be environmental assessments that will have to be done before everyone will be allowed to go in," says Winfield.

Residents are being asked to assess their damage and request help from FEMA by calling 1-800-621-FEMA.
