Jackson Yacht Club's "Blessing of the Fleet"

Posted: Updated:

A lot of people were enjoying the holiday out on the water Memorial Day. In fact, a large number of boaters participated in a blessing of the fleet.

The "Blessing of the Fleet" is a tradition that began centuries ago in Mediterranean fishing communities.

Monday, the ceremony took place off the point of the Jackson Yacht Club in Ridgeland.

Power boaters, houseboats and sailboats participated in the event.

One by one, they were blessed by Sister Dorothea of St. Dominic Hospital. "May your blessings be on this good craft and all who sail in her," said the Sister as boats passed by.

According to JYC Commodore Jimmy Young, "It's a custom that's gotten practiced all over the country particularly around yacht clubs and we've invited the public to participate this year as well as our yacht club members."

The festive event was hosted by the Jackson Yacht Club and open to the public.

Water taxi's ferried people to and from the shoreline.

There was food, a band, prizes and lots of Memorial Day fun for families onshore as well.
