MDOT hopes to stay on schedule with road openings

Posted: Updated:
WARREN COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

MDOT officials say they are optimistic they will be able to stay on schedule with road openings this week. Nearly half a dozen roads were closed due to flooding in recent weeks.

MDOT workers were out inspecting roads and taking samples today, trying to determine if water was able to permeate beneath the pavement.

On Highway 61 south of Vicksburg, Engineer Daniel Cauthen inspected a foot long piece of asphalt.

"We can see if water goes back in the hole, and it didn't so that's good news," Cauthen said.

MDOT plans to open Highways 61 near Redwood, Highway 3 and Highway 49W in Yazoo county at Noon Wednesday.

Highway 61 at the Big Black River will be opened Friday, after crews finish inspecting the road there.

Other roads like Highway 465 leading to Eagle Lake, and 149 West of Yazoo city won't be opened until sometime mid-June, because water still remains on the road.
