Family Loses Everything In Vehicle Fire

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

An Indiana family lost everything in a vehicle fire Thursday night in Jackson.  The family of four was visiting a relative in Gulfport. They were on the way back home to Terre Haute, Indiana. Motorists tried to flag the family down when they noticed flames and smoke coming from the bed of the Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck.

The driver managed to pull over on the Pearl Street exit of I-55 North in Jackson. By that time the back of the truck was engulfed in flames. Just moments after the family was able to get out, the truck was completely covered by fire. One of the passengers was visibly shaken by the close call.

"We were riding down the road and we looked in the back of the truck and we seen a little bit of smoke. We stopped and pulled over and one of our bags that were in the back, cause we're traveling, we're going to Indiana, one of our bags in the back, it caught flames. I think, like I said, maybe somebody threw a cigarette in the truck," said Carrie Millis.

No one was injured. The family included a mother, her two adult children and her teenage grand daughter. The family is trying to make arrangements for the night and another way to continue their trip home to Indiana.
