Beats Added to Precinct One In Jackson

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The Jackson Police Department was expanding its fight against crime in Precinct One. A packed house gathered Thursday night at the precinct on Cooper Road for the announcement by Chief Rebecca Coleman, and Mayor Harvey Johnson.

Two additional beats and officers are being added in this area to provide more protection for South Jackson. Community leaders say they have already seen a seven percent decrease in crime in this area.

"We hope to do it in other precincts as we get more officers on board but this is the first time that we've been able to redeploy, if you will, some of the resources to increase police visibility, increase response time, and we're glad to do it here in Precinct One where you have so many, such a large increase in population," Mayor Johnson said.

In addition to the new beats officers also have new equipment. New squad cars have been added to the police fleet.
