Annual Medgar Evers homecoming celebration

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A host of events are scheduled this week in the capital city in honor of slain civil rights leader Medgar Evers.

This Sunday will mark 48 years since Evers was gunned down in the driveway of his Jackson home.

Members of the Evers family and supporters in the community are keeping his memory alive. Among several events, one of the main festivities is the annual banquet dinner on Friday. The money raised from the banquet helps pay for college scholarships.

WMPR D.J. Don-E is an organizer for the homecoming celebration. Don-E says, "The money from there is for sending different kids to college and that's important, that's what we want, to make sure our kids go to college and get a degree."

The gospel memorial is the first event that will take place during the homecoming celebration on Thursday.
