Wolf Lake residents return and prepare to rebuild

YAZOO COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

You can see along Highway 49 W how the water has gone down, by the marks on the vegetation.

Residents of nearby Wolf Lake, an old Oxbow Lake of the Yazoo River are coming back to look inside their elevated homes that still got water and lots of it.

You have to take a boat to get to the houses and 60-year-old Skip Martin, who lives at 2595 Deerfield Road, was kind enough to use a paddle to take photographer Jim Duncan out to his house, along with another resident Hy Crocker.

Martin describes the damage.

"We have got to tear out all the way around the walls, the floors. We have got to remove everything four feet high at least, has to come out," Martin said.

Hy Crocker grew up on this lake and has every intention to return despite the shocking sight inside her home caused by the water

"It's a great place, it's gonna be ok, this is home, coming back, no matter what, it's where I want to be. Look at the mold right here, walls already got mold and the insulation, got to go back down to the studs," Crocker added.

Most of these houses got anywhere between four and eight feet of water inside.

Governor Haley Barbour has a vacation home here at Wolf Lake that still has three or four feet of water in it. We have learned he has not even returned to go inside because he got his furniture out and he knows he has insurance.
