JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Sunday marks the day Civil Rights icon Medgar Evers was assassinated back in 1963 outside his home in Jackson.

The date is commemorated every year with special events honoring the spirit of his life work.

Saturday morning, the City of Jackson held a parade in his honor.

Our own Howard Ballou served as grand marshal this year, getting escorted in style in a white limousine.

Jackson Police ushered in the clowns, majorettes and other attractions.

Medgar Evers played an instrumental role in desegregating Ole Miss. He was shot and killed on June 12th 1963 and he's buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
