CMMC adjusts staff, people losing jobs

Posted: Updated:

The road to economic recovery is proving bumpier for some industries, including health care. Officials at Central Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson have confirmed several employees have been handed their pink slips in the last week.

CMMC officials are blaming the economy for this "adjusting" of staff, which administrators shied away from referring to as layoffs.

An official media statement from an assistant administrator with CMMC read, "The economic conditions with which all businesses are currently confronted, with hospitals being no exception, have forced us to take actions to adjust our staffing to better align the organization with existing hospital activity levels."

Officials would not say what departments would be affected and how many employees were fired.

The entire statement from CMMC assistant administrator Sherwin Stewart is below:

"Our leadership team is continually working to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of our operations, as well as the quality of our care. Providing outstanding service and quality care to our patients remains our number one priority. Our operational plans now and in the future will always support those efforts.

Following a thorough evaluation and assessment of needs in the local community, we have made some staff changes pertaining to the hospital's operations. The economic conditions with which all businesses are currently confronted, with hospitals being no exception, have forced us to take actions to adjust our staffing to better align the organization with existing hospital activity levels.

In health care it is common practice for any responsible organization to continually evaluate patient volume and make changes based on those findings. At Central Mississippi Medical Center we are constantly working to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of our operations, as well as the quality of our care. Our goal is to offer the best patient care possible to those admitted and have the proper number of staff and services available at all times to meet the ongoing needs of our patients. Hospitals are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and we pride ourselves on properly monitoring our employment and service levels to ensure the needs of our patients are met in a timely manner."
