Vicksburg casino closed by flood set to reopen

Posted: Updated:

Diamond Jacks casino will reopen it's doors Wednesday at 3PM, following over a month long closure due to flooding.

The entertainment hall at the rear of their complex was heavily damaged by floodwaters, but the casino, hotel and restaurant were spared.  Employees were paid throughout the hiatus, working in the community, and volunteering.

The water has almost completely receded from the subdivisions north of the city. North Ward Alderman Michael Mayfield says the city is doing all they can to help flooded residents.

Right now homeowners are still in the evaluation period.  The watermarks are on the roofs of many homes.

"I want to do what's best for the residents, whether it be relocation, elevation, or buyouts," says Mayfield.

City leaders will be meeting with FEMA later this week to see how much money will be available for the flood victims who lost their homes.  Highway 465 is completely out of water.  MDOT is doing testing on the road and clearing debris.
