Drug agents arrest 3 for sale of prescription-only cold meds
MONTICELLO, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
Three people in Monticello made their initial court appearance Wednesday after being arrested for illegally selling ephedrine -- a key ingredient used to make crystal meth.
Jasbir Malhotra, 41, and Gurvinder Kaur, 35, are the owners of a convenience store where the sales took place.
Former store clerk, Theresa Lambert, 40, was also charged.
MBN Director Marshall Fisher said the three suspects, all Monticello residents, sold ephedrine for $20 per box and $240 per 12-box case from Busy Bee convenience store.
Officers serving search warrants at the store and owners' Monticello residence, after a five-month investigation dubbed Operation Busy Bee, seized a large sum of cash; nearly two dozen weapons, including handguns and assault rifles; and several cases of ephedrine, Director Fisher said.
Malhotra is charged with six counts of conspiracy to sale ephedrine and one count of possession with intent to distribute ephedrine. Kaur is charged with three counts of sale of ephedrine, three counts of conspiracy to sell ephedrine and possession with intent to distribute ephedrine. Lambert, faces three counts of sale of ephedrine.
All three are being held in the Lawrence County Jail.
Kaur is also being detained by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on an immigration violation.
Legal sales of ephedrine, which is used to treat colds and allergies, have been prescription-only in Mississippi since July of last year.
