Children left to survive on cookies, roach-laden corn flakes

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

"I love my children," stated Lena Crosby as she was led into Youth Court Thursday morning for a hearing regarding her children. She told us she did not neglect her kids.

As her father, 45 year old Ed Crosby, left a Hinds County court room, he stated a mistake was made.

Both appeared before Judge Houston Patton Thursday, Ed Crosby stating he's self-employed and works off and on, and Lena stating she has never worked.

They're charged with three counts each of child neglect. Three children were discovered in the closet of a home on Greenview Drive in Jackson Tuesday morning as landlord Dub Waltz tried to serve an eviction notice.

"They ran into the closet because they thought somebody was breaking in on them. The little girl was trying to protect her siblings," says Hinds County Sheriff's Department Captain Henry Glaze.

The 10 year old girl found in the filthy home is Lena Crosby's sister. Authorities say she was left alone to care for her 2 year old niece and 3 month old nephew.

"It was awful hot in that house. The windows were closed," Captain Glaze tells us. "They were getting hungry. Appears that small child was pretty fragile."

We asked Captain Glaze about the lack of nourishing food in the home. "There was a bag of Jack's cookies on the floor that had not been opened. But a 3 month old can't eat cookies. There was nothing else except a box of corn flakes, but it had roaches in it," he says. They also only had tap water to drink. The 10 year old girl was feeding the 3 month old a baby bottle of water when they were found.

Another one of Lena's children, a 7 year old boy, was with Ed Crosby, his grandfather, that morning.

"The 7 year old we found out about because the children were asking about that child. Then as we began to talk to neighbors they said another little boy was there," Captain Glaze says.

All of the children are in DHS custody. The baby had been taken to UMC for malnutrition. It's unclear if he's still there.

The older children will be interviewed by the children's advocacy center.
