Over 300 competitors take part in the NBHA State Championships

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A lot of excitement at the Kirk Fordice Equine Center in the Mississippi Fairgrounds.  More than 300 men, women and even children competed in the National Barrel Horse Association's State Championships Saturday.  50 of those competitors were over 50 years old. Here, riders lead their horses around three barrels and hope to score a record time and win a number of prizes.

"Every year it is just fun to get out here and compete and try to win a little money and win fastest time I guess.  It's fun.  I love doing it," said Shelton Hadley of Port Gibson.

"You have to go around each barrel and then be the fastest one back obviously," said the event's director Billy Webb. "It's a speed event.  It takes a very athletic horse to go that fast and still turn that quickly."

Competitors with the best times will go on to the finals Sunday.
