Hinds supervisors approve AMR fee hike

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A trip to the hospital might cost you more in the future.

Monday, the Hinds County Board of Supervisors approved a request from American Medical Response to charge for new medical procedures.

The ambulance service says it has four new medical techniques, equipment and supplies that will improve a patient's health and recover from illnesses faster.

The fees will range from $50 to $120. This is the first patient care increase AMR has asked for since 2008.

AMR spokesman Jim Pollard says, "We would like for folks to understand that modern ambulance service is not just a quick safe trip to the hospital. Modern ambulance service is like bringing part of the hospital to you so we can start the lifesaving care right there the moment the paramedic first encounters you, then continue that care till you get to more advanced care at the hospital."

One of the new procedures AMR will perform is induced hypothermia for heart attack patients.  Studies have shown that by reducing the core body temperature of a patient, physicians have a greater chance of avoiding brain damage and getting the heart to beat again.

The Rankin County Board of Supervisors has already approved the same rate increase for AMR.
