JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The man who Jackson Police believe brutally beat his girlfriend Monday is behind bars Tuesday morning.

Paul Johnson, 37, is in custody and is charged with Domestic Violence Aggravated Assault. Jackson Police spokeswoman Colendula Green said more charges are forthcoming.

Police believe Johnson attacked his girlfriend Juanita Griffin, 25, at a home in the 2200 block of St. Charles Street. Officers actually responded to a call of shots fired shortly after 11 a.m. Monday, and when they arrived they found Griffin badly beaten.

Officers said Johnson kicked in the door to the home, fired several shots with a handgun inside, then he used the same weapon to beat Griffin.

Griffin is still hospitalized at UMC.
