New crime lab groundbreaking

Jackson, MS (WLBT) - A groundbreaking ceremony is held Tuesday for the state's new crime lab.

The new building will house about 125 scientists and will have a special chemistry unit.  Officials say it will also have a state of the art morgue facility.  It will replace the old building that was built in 19-76. All of this will happen in Rankin county.

Public Safety Commissioner Albert Santa Cruz says, "this new facility that's in the back ground here will be a state of the art crime lab. It will be one of the most modern probably in the united states not only in Mississippi but the united states. And it is something that has been a long time coming."

The new facility will cost between $36 to $38 million dollars.  And construction is expected to take about 2 and a half years.
