Man arrested for allegedly molesting 12 year old girl

SIMPSON COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Nearly a decade ago Gary Bates was a witness in a highly publicized child sex crimes case involving Walthall county church leader David Earl King.

Now he is behind bars in Simpson County accused of statutory rape.

Rankin County resident James Lawrence said he recently learned that his 13 year old daughter was sexually molested at her mother's home in Simpson County in late April to early May.

At the time she was 12, and he claims her attacker is 31 year old Gary Bates.

"She just said she woke up and he was on top of her and she couldn't move, and the other details I don't really want to go into at this time," said Lawrence.

Bates was taken into custody by Simpson County authorities Friday.

In August of 2001 he testified against 76 year old David Earl King, leader of The Valley of the Kings Church in Walthall County.

King and his adopted son Nathan Paul King were convicted of abusing a 14 year old boy who attended their church.

Bates said he and both men had sex with the young victim.

He entered a guilty plea to conspiracy and was given probation and not required to register as a sex offender.

"I Googled his name, and it led me to a little small article out of a Chicago paper," said the 35 year old father.

Lawrence's daughter signed an affidavit against Bates Thursday.

Simpson County Captain of Investigations Donny McGovern said Bates is originally from Indiana.

McGovern said "Bates denied the allegations. It is an ongoing investigation. We are waiting for medical records and further test results in this case."

"If this man would have been placed on our sex offender list maybe there wouldn't have been 10 years of him at large doing whatever," said Lawrence.

The Rankin County man said plea deals with sex offenders should not be made at the expense of protecting children.

Bates is being held at the Simpson County Jail on a $30,000.00 bond.
