Hinds County political forum

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Candidates for Hinds County circuit clerk, tax assessor, and sheriff faced off in a political forum hosted by Women for Progress of Mississippi, Inc.

The council chamber room of Jackson City Hall was packed with citizens trying to find out who they will vote for.

Most of the questions were directed to the men running for sheriff and, at times, the exchanges were heated.

Sheriff Malcolm McMillin said, "I'm really pleased with the format, how it was conducted. I think it was fair. Everybody got an opportunity to answer those same questions, questions coming from the audience and you can tell there were partisan camps in here but you look for that."

Candidate Tyrone Lewis, former Jackson Police Chief, said, "I've served in all aspects of the Jackson Police Department in my 28-year history plus I'm a 50-year product of this community, so, if anybody knows this community and the needs of it and seen the changes that have taken place, I have."

Candidate Johnnie Bowden said, "I come from the most progressive agency, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation from the Department of Public Safety and what our agency like is, integrity is high and one thing I want to bring that to the department of the Hinds County Sheriff's Department."

Voters go to the polls for the August second primary.
