It was once the tomato capital of the world. Friday night the town of Crystal Springs crowned a new Tomato Queen. Kaylon Estes was one of eight contestants competing to represent Crystal Springs at various events in Copiah County and around the state.
The contestants were chosen to represent local groups or businesses. They wrote a 50 word essay on why they would like to hold the title to represent Crystal Springs. City officials tell us in the late 1800's and early 1900's more produce was shipped from Crystal Springs than anywhere else in the country.
The Tomato Festival was revived in 1996. This year's festival kicks off with a 5k walk and run Saturday morning at 7am the Tomato Festival begins at 8am.
