ADAMS COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Sheriff Chuck Mayfield says more charges are pending for the man suspected of shooting a deputy following a bank robbery.

It happened around noon Friday at United Mississippi Bank on Sargeant Prentiss Road in Natchez. According to Mayfield, three deputies were at KFC when someone alerted them to a bank robbery in progress next door.

Outside deputies came face to face with the masked gunman. Gunfire was exchanged. The man fled while continuing to fire at an auto dealership employee who had been chasing him.

Deputies found him in a ravine behind an apartment complex.

Twenty-three-year old Kendrick Smith of Jackson has been charged with one count of armed robbery, three counts of aggravated assault on law enforcement officers, and one count of aggravated assault for firing shots at the auto dealership employee. He remains at a local hospital suffering a gunshot wound to the back from deputy Buddy Frank's gun.

Deputy Frank was shot in the right leg. He is recovering at home.
