Brandon man arrested for fatal hit and run

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A Rankin county man is behind bars charged with running down a man and killing him on a Jackson street.

Police responded to the incident in the 1500 block of Ellis Avenue near the entrance of the Metro Inn around 5:30 Sunday morning.

Officers were initially called to the scene of a hit and run.

According to investigators, 18-year-old Deryl Paul Dedmon of Brandon was inside his truck when he was talking with a man at the motel entrance.

Witnesses told police that the man walked away then Dedmon drove his truck onto the shoulder of the road.

He reportedly ran the man down and left the scene.

"According to witnesses a 49-year-old black male subject had a verbal altercation with the suspect. The suspect was stopped at I-20 at the Airport Road exit and taken into custody. He was subsequently charged with murder," said J.P.D. Officer Colendula Green.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

His name has not been released.

Dedmon has been charged with murder and is being held at the Hinds County Detention Center.
