Fire destroys Rankin County home

RANKIN COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Fire destroyed a house in Rankin County Monday afternoon.   The house is located on Hickory Ridge Drive near Hoover Lake, south of Richland and west of Florence.  Skycopter 3 soared above the burning home around 12:30 this afternoon.  17 year old Evan Grimes was alone inside, nearly asleep.

"I looked into a mirror on our wall and I saw orange behind me.  I ran to the door, opened it up and the whole threshold was on fire.  So I just ran through the house and tried to find as much stuff as I could to take with me," said Grimes.

While gathering family photos, he thought he could try to fight the fire.  "What was going on in my mind was maybe I could put this out myself.  I tried grabbing a water hose at first, but it burned my hand a little bit there," said the teen.

He ran to a neighbors house, called 911 and his mother.

"God was watching over him.  I'm thankful God was there to wake him up and open those eyes," said mother Liz Grimes. "I arrived within 20 minutes of the phone call and there was nothing there but flames."

Cleary firefighters answered the call, but quickly realized the blaze was too big to handle on their own.  They called on the help of Florence and Richland Fire Departments.

"When we got out on scene we called for additional back up and man power.  It was fully involved when we got here," said Liz Grimes.

The house could not be saved.  Precious family heirlooms were charred.

"There's an antique Jeep in the garage.  There are antique guns that will not be able to be replaced and that is about all we can't replace, but I'm thankful I got my sons," said Grimes.

Fire investigators have not yet determined where the fire originated or what sparked the blaze.  The Grimes family was also looking for their German Shepherd dog who went missing during the fire.
